The Rev. Mary Ellen Ashcroft, vicar at Spirit of the Wilderness, in Grand Marais will be offering a course called “Deepening Roots” this Fall, 2017. The course involves reading the Bible, discovering scripture as narrative & story, canon & guide. Participants process questions of how we read scripture, how we use scripture and finally how to claim the Bible as “our book.” “Deepening Roots” aims for all participants to become astute Bible readers and informed theologians, who can think and speak meaningfully about God.
Mary Ellen has served as vicar at Spirit of the Wilderness for over 7 years. Prior to becoming ordained, she was professor of English Literature at Bethel College. She loves to hike and canoe the Boundary Waters and Wilderness. She’s a Mom, Grandmother to 6 grandchildren and partner to Suzanne.
The course will be offered at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in St. Paul, 2136 Carter Ave., in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood, just off Como Ave. It will most likely occur once a month, on a Thursday late afternoon/early evening. $250/person is the cost, which includes 8 sessions and a 3-day retreat in May or June, 2018.
